Learning To Swim Is Vital For Kiwi Kids

Learning to swim is vitally important for kiwi kids, especially in the Bay of Plenty.

Learning to swim is vitally important for kiwi kids, especially in the Bay of Plenty. We are surrounded by water! Whether it’s the beach, the pool or fresh water, our kids are in, on or near water constantly – and more so in summer.

Our Bay of Plenty region has the 4th highest regional drowning rate in New Zealand and our drowning rates have been increasing*, not decreasing!

A core element of the Bay of Plenty’s Water Safety Strategy, driven by the Water Safety NZ, is to increase our water safety skills with education and training programmes.

Parents can play a very active role in this area by considering swimming lessons for their children.

There are over six different swim school providers in Tauranga that have a range of lesson options – so you can choose the best school for you and your child.

At Baywave and Greerton Aquatic & Leisure CentreBaySwim offer lessons through the school term for a range of ages; starting at 3 months and going right through their schooling. Even helping you child prepare for joining a Swim Squad in their early teens.

If your school term is already packed full of afterschool activities, consider taking fast-track lessons during the school holidays. These are more intensive, one-on-one lessons, that BaySwim provides which can be attended each day to help them vastly improve their swimming ability in a short space of time.

BaySwim also offer adult swimming lessons as well. If you need to build your water confidence and ability also, consider taking a class and see what you think. Check out this Blog from Karlie Megay, who tried swimming lessons in 2020 and hasn’t looked back since!
